Foal hoof protective covering

Important Information Foaling – the Eponychium by Jill Giese

“What on earth…….  Did I mistakenly breed my mare to Big Bird from Sesame Street?!   The first time I witnessed a foal enter the world I was not prepared for the shock of the appearance of the its front feet.  The hooves appeared to be covered with “feathers”.   As mares typically give birth in the middle […]

Dreamcatcher Meadows gets concession from Ironman for local farmers.

The closure of Pemberton Meadows Road for the cycling phase of the Iron Man race, the sole access to numerous farms and businesses, including ours, has had an increasingly negative impact on our business over the years and despite several attempts to start a constructive dialog to address the issue, there has been no success. We have a very short window to sell current year foals and with so many concerts and local events, potential customers are put off visiting our farm by Whistler events causing traffic issues. We love nothing more than sharing the natural beauty of our riverside mountain valley farm with visitors - but massive commercial events unilaterally denying us, and our customers, the sole access road to the farm is totally unreasonable. Numerous conversations with neighbouring farmers and local businesses confirmed we at Dreamcatcher Meadows Sporthorse Breeding & Equestrian Training Pemberton BC and Equimat Stall Mats - North America are not alone suffering this financial travesty. It took a threat to file an injunction threatening to stop the entire race (it is illegal to unilaterally deny public access to one's home excepting an emergency situation - I was a lawyer in another life) at the Vancouver Supreme Court to finally get the attention of someone sufficiently up the Ironman corporate ladder to start a meaningful conversation. Although I didn't succeed in getting anywhere near the compensation needed to replace our actual lost income, I did get a marketing opportunity for local businesses and our neighbouring farmers to take advantage of.

Pemberton businesses will have a trade booth at the Whistler Olympic plaza to showcase the high quality of our diverse services and products on offer to the commercial world. Not sure as of today if the booth will be in a good location or what the size of the booth will be. While I am waiting for details and to help define our needs, please let me know if your business would like to participate (or pass these details to someone you know would might benefit). Although a far cry from compensating for the actual loss of income, we will at least have a forum to spread the news of our local businesses - and perhaps get to know each other better manning the booth.

I would be grateful if you would email myself or one of our young staff assisting (Jason, Jess, Kirsten, Nicole and Chris) and register your interest in participating. If you can't physically attend the booth. we will be happy to hand out any information you wish to circulate (brochures, etc,). A written "cheat sheet" with a summary of your business and service/products would be helpful to assist booth attendants explain you to booth visitors. If you have a leaflet or business card, we will be happy to hand them out. We plan to have a large screen TV to play video clips. If you have an external hard drive stick with a video of you describing your business or similar footage, we'd be happy to run it for you. Just make sure the stick it is clearly labelled and addressed to return it to you.

No charge to anyone - just happy to help our neighbours and express our gratitude for all the generosity and kindness you have shown us over the past 14 years. Watch out for this week's Pique newsmagazine as sports journalist Dan Falloon will have details of what Ironman will provide for us (or at least as much detail as we will have at time of press). Please share your thoughts on this Facebook page.
